Journal #2 – Fear
A piece of media that scared me as a child was Deep Blue Sea (1999), the movie is about a group of scientists try to find a cure to Alzheimer’s disease on an island until a group of sharks disrupts their research. This movie was introduced to me from my sister who was in high school at the time and I was very young, I think about five to six years old. Due to a young age, the genre itself scared me as I never watched horror movies and was not common for children that age to watch. At the time, my sister thought it was funny for her to traumatize her sister and I did not find it amusing in any way. What did not help the most were the sharks and the blood in almost every scene of the movie and all I did was hide under the blankets as I begged her to stop the movie, but she did not want to as she wanted to continue watching it. Immediately, I decided to run into my room before my sister could catch me and at that point, she decided to let me run away. Since then, I have never been able to watch shark-related shows or movies such as Jaws. About two years ago, I challenged myself to rewatch the movie to see if I overcame that fear, for the most part, I managed to survive most of the movie except the jump scares which still left an impact. However, the fact that I was able to overcome that fear of watching the movie in its entirety is a huge accomplishment for me as I never thought I would have been able to watch it again. Also, watching an R-rated movie with a young child is never a good idea.
